Scarlett Pomers: Stepping Out

Many of us know Scarlett Pomers from her witty character Kira on the hit show Reba. Although Scarlett admits she is similiar to Kira in some way, in many ways they are different. "I think we both care about doing well in school, but Kyra is going through a lot with her family and often keeps it inside until she blows up. I prefer to speak my mind and not keep it bottled up."

Having been discovered at the age of 3, Scarlett has quite an impressive resume, including working with a guy who has been making nothing short of a media frenzie, Michael Jackson. "I was in 'Heal the World.' It was a beautiful video about children of war-torn nations. I was a child of Belfast, Ireland," explained Scarlett.

Appearing in a music video at a young age was just a foreshadow of what was to come for Scarlett Pomers. At 5' 2" this small girl had a voice that was ready to bring the house down. But don't worry--acting is still a very big part of Scarlett's life, and that is not about to change anytime soon. "I could never give up acting, but music is such an exciting challenge for me right now and I absolutely love co-writing my own songs. I am so lucky to be learning and working with the talented people I'm collaborating with right now. As far as the actress life, I love being part of a family who all work together to make the show as entertaining as we can. The music life? Well who wouldn't want to be a rock star? I love writing songs and performing live is so much fun. Oh, yeah, staying up late and then sleeping in is a nice perk too."

Talk about demanding schedule--between acting, performing live shows and writing an album, it does not seem like a lot of time is left. "Aside from guitar and dance, I also take drum lessons and I love martial arts. I love to write stories and poems too. Sometimes I just hang out with my friends." You can also add Egyptian belly dancing and East Indian tribal dancing to the list, both of which she trys to incoporate into her live performances.

Although Scarlett is living a dream that many of us only can imagine, there is one dream we all share. "My dream date without a doubt would be Johnny Depp. He's incredibly hot and my favorite actor. Now if I could get him to wear that pirate costume instead of a tux, my dream would come true! " We are with you on that one!

Interview

Weren't you pretty much discovered at age 3? Was it by chance?

Scarlett: An agent approached my mom when I was three thinking I would be good for commercials. I was very loud and outgoing, plus I wasn't afraid of anybody.

Which Michael Jackson video were you in when you were younger?

Scarlett: I was in "Heal the World". It was a beautiful video about children of war-torn nations. I was a child of Belfast, Ireland.

How do you compare and conflict from the character you play on Reba?

Scarlett: I think we both care about doing well in school, but Kyra is going through a lot with her family and often keeps it inside until she blows up. I prefer to speak my mind and not keep it bottled up.

As you are spending a lot of time in the recording studio lately, are you working on your first album? If so, what is the name of the album?

Scarlett: I am working on an album with some incredibly talented people. We are writing together and I'm learning a lot. Unfortunately with my work schedule it is taking time to complete the project. Hopefully with our hiatus coming up in March we'll be able to finish soon. I haven't decided on the title yet.

How would you describe your music-what genre is it?

Scarlett: My style is definitely Rock. It's my favorite kind of music, but I listen to a lot of different styles and I think it all influneces me in some way.

What are your songs about?

Scarlett: I think they're about empowerment. Music can be so inspirational. I sing and write about being strong and taking care of yourself, not being dependent on anyone else for your own happiness.

Do you play guitar on all of your songs?

Scarlett: In my live show, I play on some of them but I also study Egyptian Belly-Dance and East Indian Tribal dance and I try to incorporate some of that into my performances.

Have you performed live yet?

Scarlett: Yes, I try to perform as often as possible and not just at clubs. I love to go to small venues and perform at open mic nights when I have a new song. People don't know me as an actress there and they don't know my age, so I get unbiased feedback on my material

You have been tutored while working. Did you ever go to public school? Will you make it to a prom? Who would your dream date be?

Scarlett: I have gone to public school, but it just doesn't work with my schedule anymore, so I use a homeschool program. There are so many kids using this program that they have a prom and graduation like other schools. I think it will be funny to go to the prom and meet most of the people there for the first time. My dream date without a doubt would be Johnny Depp. He's incredibly hot and my favorite actor. Now if I could get him to wear that pirate costume instead of a tux, my dream would come true!

Which do you love more: acting or singing? The actress life or the music life?

Scarlett: I could never give up acting, but music is such an exciting challenge for me right now and I absolutely love co-writing my own songs. I am so lucky to be learning and working with the talented people I'm collaborating with right now. As far as the actress life, I love being part of a family who all work together to make the show as entertaining as we can. The music life? Well who wouldn't want to be a Rock Star? I love writing songs and performing live is so much fun. Oh yeah, staying up late and then sleeping in is a nice perk too!

Who are some of your musical influences?

Scarlett: My favorite artist is Stevie Nicks. I really love classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Heart, Nirvana and Janis Joplin. I also like Evanescence, Metallica, The Donnas, Queens of the Stone Age & several others.

Who are some of your acting influences?

Scarlett: Johnny, of course and I'm blown away by Elijah Wood and Sean Astin in the "Lord of the Rings" movies. I've seen all of them several times!

Does Reba give you pointers as far as your music career goes? If so, what are some words she's shared with you?

Scarlett: I do ask Reba for advice about things like, "what do you do when you're sick on a performance day ?" Her advice is always common sense like use a humidifier at night and a throat spray called, "Entertainer's Secret".

What is your New Year's resolution?

Scarlett: I forgot to make any, which is a good thing. If I'm too busy to make them, I can't break them, right?

What do you do in your spare time?

Scarlett: Aside from guitar and dance, I also take drum lessons and I love martial arts. I love to write stories and poems too. Sometimes I just hang out with my friends.

This month we are featuring "All That Is Black" in the fashion section of our online magazine. What is the one must-have/favorite black item (clothing, jewelery, shoes, etc) ?

Scarlett: This is easy. My black platform boots! I own several different pairs and I love them. They even wrote a pair into an episode on REBA.(I am sending you a picture of one of my favorite pairs)

What do we see for you in the near future? Are you going to start concentrating more on your music?

Scarlett: Yes, I'd like to finish my album and hopefully get a record deal. I would love to do some touring on our hiatus too.

Anything else you want to say to our readers before you go?

Scarlett: Thanks to everyone who watches REBA and I hope you'll check out some of the song samples on my website. Thanks for all the fun questions!
